Meet Our Surgeons

Our surgeons and staff are fully equipped to perform all operations and procedures related to the following specialties: Orthopedics (including the Spine), Hand Surgery, Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) and Pain Management. Many of our Surgeons specialize in sports medicine, as well as other disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Our Orthopedic Surgeons treat acute, chronic, traumatic and recurrent injuries. Our Spine Program offers individualized comprehensive spine care and treatments for all conditions of the spine. We offer non-surgical interventions, minimally invasive surgery, and motion preservation surgery including total disc arthroplasty. Our Hand Surgeons specialize in both surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions and problems that occur in the hand or upper extremity, including injury and infection. Our ENT specialists focus on relieving allergies, snoring and sleep apnea, sinus and ear infections, hearing loss, and hoarse voices. Our Pain Management medical specialty is dedicated to treating acute, sub-acute, and chronic pain. The goal of pain medicine is to improve quality of life and help patients return to everyday activities with the hope of avoiding surgery.   • Dr. Paul Abeyta

    Dr. Paul Abeyta

    Dr. Abeyta earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and completed both his medical degree and orthopaedic residency training at the University of California at San Francisco. He is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Sports Medicine physician. His practice is located at the Mills-Peninsula Burlingame Division of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. He completed advanced Fellowship training in Sports Medicine at both Stanford University and with the S.O.A.R Medical Group. Dr. Abeyta’s specialty interests lie in Sports Medicine, focusing on articular cartilage injury, as well as tendon and ligament injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. He routinely performs anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscus surgery in the knee as well as rotator cuff and labral surgery in the shoulder. During his training he worked with professional athletes on the ATP Tour and with the San Francisco 49ers. He performed athletic examinations at the NFL Combines and has also worked with local collegiate teams at Stanford University, Santa Clara University, and Foothill College. He is the co-Founder and co-Director of a high school sports program providing education and sports medicine care for Bay Area high school student-athletes. He serves as the team physician for many of the local high school programs along the San Francisco peninsula. Dr. Abeyta is trained in the most cutting edge arthroscopic surgical techniques and works closely with highly skilled Physical Therapists and Certified Personal Trainers.   • Dr. Kenneth Akizuki

    Dr. Kenneth Akizuki

    Dr. Kenneth Akizuki is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He graduated from The George Washington School of Medicine with his doctorate of medicine in 1993. He went on to complete his residency with the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program from 1995-1999. Following his passion, he then moved to New York to complete the James A. Nicholas Sports Medicine Fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital. During his fellowship, he served as the Assistant Orthopaedic Consultant for the New York Jets Football Organization, the New York Rangers Hockey Organization, the New York Islanders Hockey Organization, and the New Jersey Red Dogs Football Organization. He was also the Assistant Team Physician at Hofstra University and Hunter College. In 2000, he moved back to the Bay area and took a position as attending physician with the San Francisco Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Medical Group, Inc. At this time, he also began serving as a team physician for the San Francisco Giants Baseball Organization, a position that he still holds to this date. His notoriety in the sports medicine world and his passion for sports also earned him the position of team physician at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, and Skyline College. In addition to this, he is an Orthopaedic Consultant for the City College of San Francisco and for Santa Clara University. Dr. Akizuki remains heavily involved in cutting edge technologies available to his patients. He is a member of the International Cartilage Repair Society and is an active presenter at the Genzyme Carticel Speakers Bureau. He is also a member of the Medical Advisory Committee for Major League Baseball. He was subcommittee chairman of the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguard and Medical Aspects of Sports and was awarded recognition by the National Athletic Trainers Association at their annual Far West meeting in 2004. He lectures at the University of California, San Jose State University, and has presented at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons annual meeting. Dr. Akizuki’s accomplishments and affiliations have allowed him to become well-known throughout the Bay area and the surrounding cities. He operates at Pacific Heights Surgery Center in San Francisco, where he has played an intricate role in establishing the highest level of health care standards for his patients.   • Dr. Lesley Anderson

    Dr. Lesley Anderson

    Dr. Lesley Anderson received her BS from Penn State and completed her MD at Hershey Medical School (Penn State) in 1976. At UCLA, Dr. Anderson was their first female orthopedic resident. She completed a fellowship in knee surgery and sports medicine at the Blazina Orthopedic Clinic and has been at the forefront in developing biologic resurfacing techniques of the knee for the past 25 years. Dr. Anderson is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and Arthroscopy Association of Northern America. She is chair of the California Orthopedic Association Workers Compensation Committee. She has been listed in Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctors” from 2000-2011 inclusive.   • Dr. Neeti Bathia

    Dr. Neeti Bathia

    Dr. Neeti Bathia is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician who specializes in the diagnosis and management of spine problems and other musculoskeletal complaints. She trained at Weill Cornell Medical College, the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, and the Hospital for Special Surgery, and she has been practicing medicine in the Bay Area since 2011. Dr. Bathia’s clinical expertise includes fluoroscopically guided cervical, thoracic and lumbar epidural injections, facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, and medial branch ablations. She is also skilled in ultrasound guidance for joint and soft tissue injections, and she has a particular clinical interest in treating pregnant and postpartum women with back and hip pain and people who run frequently. She is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and in sports medicine.

    Dr. Kyle Bickel

    Dr. Kyle D Bickel received his medical degree from the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine. He completed his residency in plastic surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. He also received specialty training in microsurgery at the Department of Microsurgery, Transplantation, and Replantation at Davies Medical Center in San Francisco and completed an AO International Fellowship in Hand Surgery in Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Bickel also completed the Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore. He was Founder and Co-Director of the Hand Surgery Service at The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Bickel is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He maintains membership in numerous hand and medical societies, including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, where he currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hand Surgery. Dr. Bickel is an instructor for AO North America, teaching principles and techniques in fracture fixation to surgeons from around the world. Dr. Bickel’s practice focuses on the treatment of all injuries and conditions in the hand, wrist, and upper extremity, in both adults and children. He has particular interest and expertise in the areas of wrist injuries, complex fractures of the hand and wrist, arthroscopic wrist surgery, nerve injuries of the arm and hand, surgery for arthritis in the hand and wrist, surgical and non-surgical (enzyme injection) treatment of Dupuytren’s Disease, and minimally invasive fracture care.   • Dr. Jeffrey Halbrecht

    Dr. Jeffrey Halbrecht

    Dr. Halbrecht is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He has been an active member of the learning center committee, which teaches other orthopedic surgeons from around the world current techniques in arthroscopic surgery. Dr. Halbrecht is a member of AOSSM (American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine), the former medical director for the Women’s World Pro Ski Tour, a consultant for AVP Volleyball, and US Soccer, and former Associate Professor at University of California at San Francisco in the Graduate Department of Physical Therapy. Dr. Halbrecht has been a pioneer in minimally invasive techniques in arthroscopic surgery including numerous articles and presentations on in-office arthroscopic techniques, and is currently involved in research on the treatment of articular cartilage injuries and new techniques in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder. Dr Halbrecht is also a member of numerous medical societies and is a frequent lecturer nationally and internationally on techniques in Arthroscopic surgery. Dr Halbrecht obtained his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, where he graduated with honors, and did his medical school training at New York University where he was president of the AOA honor society. He did his orthopedic training at the prestigious Hospital for Joint Disease in New York and has completed two fellowships, one in orthopedic biomechanics and research, and the other in sports medicine at the world renowned Southern California Center for Sports Medicine.   • Dr. Youjeng Kim

    Dr. Youjeng Kim

    Dr. Youjeong Kim studied Neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received her medical degree from UT Houston followed by Orthopaedic Surgery residency at University of California in San Francisco. She is fellowship trained in spine surgery and was the first woman spine surgery fellow at the Emory Spine Center in Atlanta, GA.

    Prior to joining Golden Gate Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic surgery, she was in private practice at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Dr. Kim is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and teaches at the San Francisco Veterans Administration Hospital. She has authored peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters on orthopaedic and spine surgery. She is a member of the North American Spine Society and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

    Youjeong Kim, M.D. is a fellowship trained board-certified orthopaedic spine surgeon who offers individualized comprehensive spine care and treatments for all conditions of the spine. Her philosophy of patient care is centered on patient education, and all aspects of her practice involve educating the patient about their spine condition and treatment options. She believes that most all spinal conditions can be treated non-operatively. Her special interests include minimally invasive surgery, motion preservation surgery including total disc arthroplasty, and complex cervical spine surgery.

    Dr. Patrick Lang

    Dr. Lang graduated with honors from the College of the Holy Cross and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and then went on to complete an orthopaedic hand surgery fellowship at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore. Dr. Lang now works as a staff surgeon at the Hand Center of San Francisco. Dr. Lang provides expert care in all disorders of the upper extremity including, but not limited to, hand and wrist fractures, tendon and nerve injuries, complex ligament injuries, nerve compression, and arthritis.   • Dr. Marvin Lo

    Dr. Marvin Lo

    Dr. Lo is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with advanced sub-specialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Advanced arthroscopic techniques of the knee, shoulder, and hip. He grew up in Southern California, but after 16 years in Northern California, considers himself a Bay Area Native! He graduated with a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. He continued his post – graduate education at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) where he received both a masters in health and medical sciences as well as his medical degree (M.D.). He completed his residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF as well. Dr. Lo underwent advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine, Knee and Shoulder Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Sports Medicine. Dr. Lo returned to California to join the Orthopaedic Group of San Francisco. Dr. Lo’s subspecialty interests include the treatment of complex injuries in the shoulder, more specifically in throwers and overhead athletes; and the treatment of complex tendon and ligament injuries around the knee (including double bundle ACL and revision ACL surgery). Dr. Lo has a background in basic science research in the prevention of articular cartilage injury and has a specific interest in the most cutting edge treatments of articular cartilage injury as well. During his training, he worked with collegiate and professional athletes with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, University of Pittsburgh Men’s Basketball, University of Pittsburgh Athletics, Duquesne Athletics, and Robert Morris division III football and hockey as well. He is the co-Founder and co-Director of the High School Sports Program, providing education and sports medicine care to Bay Area high school student-athletes. He serves as the team physician for San Mateo High School, among other high school programs in the San Francisco and Peninsula areas. Dr. Lo is well published in the medical literature with papers in various journals such as Lancet, Clinics in Sports Medicine, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related research, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage to name a few.     Dr. Matthew Mingrone

    Dr. Matthew Mingrone is the lead physician for eOs Sleep California centers. He is the former President and Medical Director of Sereno, The Center for Snoring Solutions in San Francisco. Dr. Mingrone is a Board Certified Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat physician — ENT) who specializes in snoring and sleep apnea issues. He has over twelve years of experience and is highly trained in medically proven, minimally invasive treatments for snoring and sleep apnea. Dr. Mingrone has appeared in numerous national publications and on television as an expert on ear, nose and throat issues and has helped thousands of patients resolve snoring and sleep problems. Dr. Mingrone’s interest in this area, combined with his understanding that patients with these conditions could greatly benefit from a practice which focuses on comprehensive care of patients with these issues, led to his interest and participation with eOs sleep.     Dr. William Montgomery

    Dr. William Montgomery has been practicing orthopaedic surgery with San Francisco Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1992. He is board-certified and fellowship-trained. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Colgate University and his M.D. at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. He went on to complete his surgical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City in 1991. He then completed a sports medicine fellowship at The Kerlan Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles. During his fellowship, Dr. William Montgomery assisted in the care of multiple professional teams including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Rams, Lakers and Kings. Since he has been in practice, he has been the team physician for the San Francisco Giants, Spiders, Seals and the San Jose Lasers. Currently, he is the head team physician for the University of San Francisco and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep.     Dr. Laura Sciaroni

    Laura Sciaroni is a Bay Area native, and has been in practice with the Orthopaedic Group of San Francisco since 2003. She is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Sciaroni earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz and her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. She completed her residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California, Irvine and completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Lake Tahoe Orthopaedic Institute. Dr. Sciaroni’s practice includes general orthopaedics and sports medicine, with a focus on surgery and rehabilitation of the shoulder and knee. Her research interests have included the biomechanics of anterior shoulder dislocation, and she has published and presented nationally on the topic.     Dr. David F. Smolins

    “The aim of the wise is not to secure pleasure, but to avoid pain.” –Aristotle A Magna Cum Laude graduate of The University of Texas at Austin with degrees in Psychology and Biological Sciences, Dr. Smolins received virtually every top honor in his graduating class. After finishing his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas at San Antonio (again with top honors), Dr. Smolins spent a year as an intern at The University of Chicago/Weiss Memorial Hospital. At University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Smolins completed his resident training in Anesthesiology, he followed with Fellowship training in Pain Management. In addition, his experience includes responsibilities as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at UCSF/Veteran Affairs Medical Center and as an Anesthesiologist for Kaiser San Francisco. Dr. Smolins has practiced Pain Management with Remedy Medical Group in Redwood City since 2007 and founded the San Francisco office in 2009. He is double Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management. Dr. Smolins’ Pain Management experience includes: Fellowship training specializing in the multi-disciplinary management of acute and chronic pain. Techniques include all standard spinal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, spinal cord stimulation, radiofrequency ablation, sympathetic blocks, discography, and medical management.

    Dr. Eugene M. Wolf

    Dr. Eugene M. Wolf is a graduate of University of Bordeaux School of Medicine in France and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the National Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Arlington, Virginia. He is internationally recognized for his work in the development of multiple arthroscopic surgical techniques for the knee and shoulder. He teaches Internationally and Nationally with the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and as a Master Instructor in Arthroscopic Surgery at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, Illinois. Dr. Wolf also serves as the Director of the Pacific Heights Surgery Center.

  • Dr. Kenneth Akizuki is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He graduated from The George Washington School of Medicine with his doctorate of medicine in 1993. He went on to complete his residency with the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program from 1995-1999. Following his passion, he then moved to New York to complete the James A. Nicholas Sports Medicine Fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital. During his fellowship, he served as the Assistant Orthopaedic Consultant for the New York Jets Football Organization, the New York Rangers Hockey Organization, the New York Islanders Hockey Organization, and the New Jersey Red Dogs Football Organization. He was also the Assistant Team Physician at Hofstra University and Hunter College. In 2000, he moved back to the Bay area and took a position as attending physician with the San Francisco Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Medical Group, Inc. At this time, he also began serving as a team physician for the San Francisco Giants Baseball Organization, a position that he still holds to this date. His notoriety in the sports medicine world and his passion for sports also earned him the position of team physician at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, and Skyline College. In addition to this, he is an Orthopaedic Consultant for the City College of San Francisco and for Santa Clara University. Dr. Akizuki remains heavily involved in cutting edge technologies available to his patients. He is a member of the International Cartilage Repair Society and is an active presenter at the Genzyme Carticel Speakers Bureau. He is also a member of the Medical Advisory Committee for Major League Baseball. He was subcommittee chairman of the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguard and Medical Aspects of Sports and was awarded recognition by the National Athletic Trainers Association at their annual Far West meeting in 2004.   • Dr. Lesley Anderson received her BS from Penn State and completed her MD at Hershey Medical School (Penn State) in 1976. At UCLA, Dr. Anderson was their first female orthopedic resident. She completed a fellowship in knee surgery and sports medicine at the Blazina Orthopedic Clinic and has been at the forefront in developing biologic resurfacing techniques of the knee for the past 25 years. Dr. Anderson is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and Arthroscopy Association of Northern America.   • Dr. Neeti Bathia is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician who specializes in the diagnosis and management of spine problems and other musculoskeletal complaints. She trained at Weill Cornell Medical College, the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, and the Hospital for Special Surgery, and she has been practicing medicine in the Bay Area since 2011. Dr. Bathia’s clinical expertise includes fluoroscopically guided cervical, thoracic and lumbar epidural injections, facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, and medial branch ablations. She is also skilled in ultrasound guidance for joint and soft tissue injections, and she has a particular clinical interest in treating pregnant and postpartum women with back and hip pain and people who run frequently.   • Dr. Kyle D Bickel received his medical degree from the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine. He completed his residency in plastic surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. He also received specialty training in microsurgery at the Department of Microsurgery, Transplantation, and Replantation at Davies Medical Center in San Francisco and completed an AO International Fellowship in Hand Surgery in Bern, Switzerland.   • Dr. Halbrecht is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He has been an active member of the learning center committee, which teaches other orthopedic surgeons from around the world current techniques in arthroscopic surgery.   • Dr. Youjeong Kim studied Neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received her medical degree from UT Houston followed by Orthopaedic Surgery residency at University of California in San Francisco. She is fellowship trained in spine surgery and was the first woman spine surgery fellow at the Emory Spine Center in Atlanta, GA.

    Prior to joining Golden Gate Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic surgery, she was in private practice at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Dr. Kim is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and teaches at the San Francisco Veterans Administration Hospital. She has authored peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters on orthopaedic and spine surgery. She is a member of the North American Spine Society and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

    Youjeong Kim, M.D. is a fellowship trained board-certified orthopaedic spine surgeon who offers individualized comprehensive spine care and treatments for all conditions of the spine. Her philosophy of patient care is centered on patient education, and all aspects of her practice involve educating the patient about their spine condition and treatment options. She believes that most all spinal conditions can be treated non-operatively.   • Dr. Lang graduated with honors from the College of the Holy Cross and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and then went on to complete an orthopaedic hand surgery fellowship at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore. Dr. Lang now works as a staff surgeon at the Hand Center of San Francisco.   • Dr. Lo is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with advanced sub-specialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Advanced arthroscopic techniques of the knee, shoulder, and hip. He grew up in Southern California, but after 16 years in Northern California, considers himself a Bay Area Native! He graduated with a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. He continued his post – graduate education at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) where he received both a masters in health and medical sciences as well as his medical degree (M.D.). He completed his residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF as well. Dr. Lo underwent advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine, Knee and Shoulder Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Sports Medicine. Dr. Lo returned to California to join the Orthopaedic Group of San Francisco. Dr. Lo’s subspecialty interests include the treatment of complex injuries in the shoulder, more specifically in throwers and overhead athletes; and the treatment of complex tendon and ligament injuries around the knee (including double bundle ACL and revision ACL surgery). Dr. Lo has a background in basic science research in the prevention of articular cartilage injury and has a specific interest in the most cutting edge treatments of articular cartilage injury as well. During his training, he worked with collegiate and professional athletes with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, University of Pittsburgh Men’s Basketball, University of Pittsburgh Athletics, Duquesne Athletics, and Robert Morris division III football and hockey as well.   • Dr. Matthew Mingrone is the lead physician for eOs Sleep California centers. He is the former President and Medical Director of Sereno, The Center for Snoring Solutions in San Francisco. Dr. Mingrone is a Board Certified Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat physician — ENT) who specializes in snoring and sleep apnea issues.   • Dr. William Montgomery has been practicing orthopaedic surgery with San Francisco Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1992. He is board-certified and fellowship-trained. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Colgate University and his M.D. at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. He went on to complete his surgical internship at Beth Israel Medical Center and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City in 1991. He then completed a sports medicine fellowship at The Kerlan Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles.   • Laura Sciaroni is a Bay Area native, and has been in practice with the Orthopaedic Group of San Francisco since 2003. Wolf is a graduate of University of Bordeaux School of Medicine in France and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the National Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Arlington, Virginia. He is internationally recognized for his work in the development of multiple arthroscopic surgical techniques for the knee and shoulder. He teaches Internationally and Nationally with the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and as a Master Instructor in Arthroscopic Surgery at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, Illinois.
